Attorney Biography

Donna Dorgan grew up in Bergen County, New Jersey. After graduating high school, she enlisted in the United States Army and served overseas. Many of the skills she learned in the Army have helped her in the practice of law. The Army encourages teamwork, loyalty, perseverance, respect, discipline, and courage in face of adversity. She was selected to represent her Battalion in international military competitions with other NATO forces. Donna was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for her accomplishments. She is not afraid to pick up a sword and battle for her clients.

After completing her service, Donna returned to New Jersey and began her higher education. She graduated summa cum laude from Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey. Donna earned a graduate fellowship, which included full tuition and stipend, to study American History at Rutgers University Graduate School. She has a Masters Degree in History in addition to the Juris Doctor which she received from Rutgers University School of Law in Newark, NJ. During law school, Donna Dorgan was a judicial intern for the Honorable N.L. Winfield, a United States Bankruptcy Judge in Newark, NJ, and a staff member for the Women’s Rights Law Reporter, a publication of Rutgers Law School.

After graduating law school in 1994, Donna clerked for the Honorable H. C. Hollenbeck, Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey, in Bergen County. Judge Hollenbeck was assigned to the Chancery Division – Family Part. Their cases included divorces, custody disputes, post-judgment modifications of support and alimony, juvenile delinquency, and domestic violence. As a law clerk, Donna worked as a mediator of cases in the Civil Division. After her clerkship, Donna was associated with a firm in Hackensack New Jersey and worked as an Assistant Corporation Counsel for the City of Newark. She is an approved mediator for Civil, General Equity and Probate cases pursuant to Court Rule 1:40 and has served as a court appointed mediator in a variety of cases.

Donna has experienced the legal system as a litigant as well as an attorney. Consequently, she understands the process of divorce and the toll that litigation can take on a person. She has tremendous empathy for clients going through a divorce and the burden of legal proceedings. Donna is active in various community programs and has worked with many individuals who have struggled with alcohol, drugs and mental illness. She is a member of the Mental Health and Family Law Committees of the Bergen County Bar Association and is active in Women Lawyers in Bergen County. She has participated in the Morris Pashman Inn of Court and the Arthur T. Vanderbilt Inn of Court. In 2006, the Manhattan Vet Center awarded her Veteran of the Year.
